20 AI fantasy book cover prompts
Fantasy sells scale and promise, not clutter. The prompts below give the reader one world-sized idea — a gate, a sigil, an empty throne — and keep the top of the frame open, because that is where a Cinzel title belongs.
How a fantasy cover is composed
- One idea, world-sized. A gate, a crown, a bridge: the reader should grasp the promise in a single glance.
- Use a human for scale, never for story. A small figure makes a mountain enormous; a large figure turns it into a portrait.
- Keep the sky. Fantasy titles are tall and ornate — a generous upper third is what makes them look expensive.
- Two-temperature light. Cold environment with one warm source (lantern, rune, sunset) reads as magic without effects.
- Texture over detail. Painterly brushwork and weathered stone survive the thumbnail; fine filigree disappears.
Scale
The oldest fantasy promise is bigness. These five put something immense in frame with a tiny human anchor, which also leaves the sky — and therefore the title area — wide open.

Image models still garble letters, so every prompt above forbids text in the artwork and keeps the upper third calm. Your title is set afterwards as real, editable type in your genre's display face — you can change a word, translate it or resize it without regenerating the art.

Frequently asked questions
Why do these prompts forbid text in the image?
Models still produce broken letters, and a title painted into the art cannot be edited or translated. Every prompt here blocks text and reserves the upper third; the studio then sets your title in the fantasy display face.
Which tool are these written for?
The long version works in Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion or Flux. The short version is sized for the Veritas brief field, which adds genre art direction and the title-safe rules automatically.
Do these work for romantasy too?
Mostly, with one change: romantasy wants a warmer palette and a softer light — swap 'cold blue' for 'candlelight' or 'blush and gold' and keep the same composition. The romantasy shelf on this site uses Marcellus rather than Cinzel.
How do I keep a fantasy cover readable at thumbnail size?
Limit yourself to one subject and two colour temperatures, and avoid fine filigree. Then shrink the cover to about 160 pixels tall and check the title — the free thumbnail tool on this site does it in the browser.
