How to Design a Children's & Coloring Book Cover
Children's and coloring book covers sell on clarity and joy: a bright, high-energy palette, a big rounded friendly font, and a cover that instantly shows the age and the activity. Size: pick the trim first
The first decision that sets the layout is the size. Coloring/activity books: usually 8.5×11 in (a large working area). Picture books: 8×10 or 8.5×8.5 square — the square format is a children's-shelf classic. Take the size from your interior; the cover, the spine width (from page count) and the bleed all follow it. Wrong size = rejection.
Bright, joyful palettes
The children's shelf is loud. High saturation, warm and primary colors, strong contrast — a muted or pastel-heavy cover disappears on the shelf. Color is the first tool for attention here; a parent scans in seconds and the most vivid, clearest cover wins. Get the energy from color, but keep it to two or three so it reads as joyful, not chaotic.
Big, friendly fonts
Rounded, playful display faces (Fredoka, Baloo, Titan One-like) set large and clear. Avoid thin, ornate or serious serifs — readability and warmth win. The title must read easily even at thumbnail size; on a children's book the font isn't just text, it's the book's 'voice': friendly, inviting, easy.
Show what's inside
The cover should say what you're buying at a glance. A coloring book cover should reveal the line-art style and subject inside (animals, mandalas, vehicles); a picture book shows the character and the world. The buyer is a parent, and they decide in one glance — a cover that leaves the age and activity vague loses the sale.
Series consistency for activity books
Coloring and activity books, like journals, sell in series. Build one strong template, then swap the theme (animals → dinosaurs → sea creatures) — same layout, same font, same brand feel. A consistent series makes it easy for a parent to say 'one more of these' and grows the value of your catalog.
